What is the CE mark?

The CE (Conformité Européenne) mark is the manufacturer’s declaration that a product complies with all applicable EU directives and regulations, enabling its free movement across the Single Market. The marking is supported by a technical file, a declaration (EU Declaration of Conformity – DoC or Declaration of Performance – DoP) and, where required, a Notified Body (NB) certificate.
Sector-specific legal bases (examples):
Construction products: CPR 305/2011 + AVCP systems 1–4
Machinery: Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 (formerly Directive 2006/42/EC)
Electrical/electronic equipment: LVD 2014/35/EU and EMC 2014/30/EU
Medical devices: MDR 2017/745 (Classes I–III; NB assessment as applicable)
PPE: Regulation (EU) 2016/425 (Categories I–III)
Mandatory elements of the CE marking (Art. 30 of Reg. (EC) No 765/2008 + sector rules)
The CE symbol with proportions as set out in Annex II to Reg. 765/2008.
The last two digits of the year the CE mark was first affixed (mandatory for construction products).
The Notified Body ID number (where a conformity-assessment module involving an NB applies).
In accompanying documents: the declaration number (DoC/DoP), the classification/performance class, and the manufacturer’s details.
